Manual Handling in Emmerdale

Julia was very pleased with the script for the following scenes and uses this clip for hoist training purposes when teaching staff about Pre-hoist checks.  The first two scenes are the relevant ones.

Useful forms and documents

Risk Assessment Prioritization Tool Document

This is a tool to use when there are a number of risk assessments to carryout for multiple tasks, and it is impossible to complete all those assessments immediately.  It helps to prioritize which assessments should be completed first.

Informal Demonstration Notes

As a trainer you may be delivering short, informal demonstrations or training sessions. This is still "training" and should be recorded. This form may be useful to you for this purpose.

Trainer's Notes (updated July 12)

Hoist checklist.  A checklist from the Handling of People, 6th Edition that can be folded, laminated and hung from the hoist for the staff to use prior to each hoisting task

If you'd like us to include any additional resources for free download, please let us know.

Following the publication of the Handling of People, 6th Edition, Julia was asked to deliver a presentation on 'Practical Hoisting Protocols' at the Disabled Living Foundation Conference in January 2012.  Part of her chapter on 'Core Hoisting skills' looked at the causes of Hoist accidents and the implications for training and setting up safer systems.
This is an extract from the presentation.
